SV Food! Come and get it!

2006-04-26

Hi all-

ACM SIGCHI and CHI 2006 have appreciated your hard work so much they are adding two new food events for you!

On Wednesday night at 8:30 there will be a big ole dinner with all the fixin's. This is not crappy conference food, but really nice restaurant food.

Also, there will be breakfast provided for you Friday morning starting at 8am. Both of these events are *in addition to* the SV party on Thursday night. Both are also going to be at the hotel listed below. Google maps is your friend.

Thanks everyone, and I'll see you there!

Conference info

2006-04-19

Greetings all!

We're coming down to the last few days! Here are a couple of additional pieces of information that may be of use to you...

(1) Task assignment has started. We've assigned tasks for Friday and Saturday now. Tomorrow, we'll assign tasks for Sunday. For the main conference days (M-Th) we assign the tasks at 5pm the day before. If you registered for weekend tasks, check now to see your assignments. We're still light on some tasks like workshop management on Saturday and Sunday, so if you haven't signed up for any tasks yet, make sure to asap.

(2) If you have Friday tasks, and would like to know where to meet, here's your information. John Lechner will be available in Palais room 512d at 10am. Nicolai Marquardt, the day captain, will also be in that general vicinity. That's where you can go to check in and find out about Friday tasks.

(3) If you are checking in on Saturday, you can check in at Palais 512ABEF. If you don't know where the Palais is, check the maps on the main CHI website. It's pretty much right across the street from the Holiday Inn Select and a couple of blocks from the Sheraton.

(4) There will be two training session held on Saturday and Sunday. It is *mandatory* to attend one or the other, but not both. Both will be held in Palais 512ABEF. Both run over lunch, from 1-2:30. These sessions cover what your general duties are, will be attended by local organizers and some conference committee folks, and are an general an excellent opportunity to connect faces with names.

(5) As a reminder, as SV's, you are eligible for the SV lunch each day (not just the days you're doing stuff) and the exclusive SV party. We'll provide details about that at the conference, but in years past it's been a blast, and this year looks to be no different.

See you soon!

Conference Hotel Loc

2006-03-31

Hi again-

Seems like quite a few of the emails are about the location of the hotel where SV's are staying. It's on the CHI website, but repeated here for your convenience because we love you.

Catching up on email

2006-03-31

Hey gang-

We're behind on email due to some combined vacation/deadline issues, so I'm working on catching up some of that now. Thanks for your patience.

SV Hotel

2006-03-25

Hi all- There's a typo in the housing list in the previous message. SVs will be staying at Holiday Inn Select Montréal Centre-Ville, not the Holiday Inn Express. You don't need to do anything, but this message is just to insure you have the right place in case you are making taxi arrangements and so forth. Also, the task list will be ready soon, so check in in the next week or so to claim which tasks you'd like to do. See everyone soon! Cliff

Housing Information

2006-02-16

The housing list is now done, and can be found here

  • 2.
    • a) Name of a preferred roommate

  • 3. Gender
Please send this information no later than February 9th.

News Items

2006-01-30

CHI2006 is only about 3 more months away! Hopefully you are getting as excited about the conference as we are. As we get closer, we'll be sending news updates more frequently, so watch you mail box. Here are the news items of the past few weeks since the last update:

  • 1. Many of you have asked about where you are on the waitlist. The waitlist on the chi-sv.org waitlist is 'live' and is always the best place to find out where you stand. As people drop out, or the SV program expands it's updated.
  • 2. Registration is not yet open. It should open within days (hopefully). Once registration is open and if you are an accepted SV, you will recieve an e-mail telling you how to register. This e-mail will explain what you need to do to avoid paying anything up front for registration.
  • 3. Still working on details of the free / reduced cost housing, but hopefully, we should have the details worked out around the time that registration opens.
  • 4. The details of the t-shirt design contest are now on the chi-sv.org website. There are some nice prizes (besides getting to see a t-shirt with your design on it), so we encourage you to enter.

T-Shirt Contest

2006-01-30

Disregard the previous announcement about the deadline for the t-shirt contest. The new deadline is February 11th. The rules / regulations are as follows:
1. Design should be in two colors plus the t-shirt color (e.g. Red and green ink on a yellow t-shirt, or Black and orange on a white t-shirt.) The front and back can be different designs.
2. Designs should be submitted in PDF format to the SV chairs (chi2006sv@gmail.com).
3. Designs should be appropriate to the conference, and reflective of the jobs of the SVs and the conference theme. Decision of the judges are final.
And now, the prizes. First, there is a prize for entering: 2 hours of work credit for 10 entries picked at random. First prize is of course, seeing your design on all of your fellow SVs. You'll also get two more free t-shirts for friends or family. But wait, there's more! You'll also get a 'get off the waitlist' ticket. You can use this ticket for yourself, or for a friend, if you are already accepted.
Judging will be by a panel of CHI luminaries and will be anonymous. The winner will be notified by e-mail by 14 February.
Good Luck!

News Items

2006-01-15

1. Registration will be opening shortly, with the two or three weeks. If you are an accepted SV, you will be asked to register online as an SV by about February 15th. This means you should be finalizing your plans to come to Montreal over the next month. There will be more details about how to register as we learn them.
2. There are several major changes in CHI compared to previous years. The first, and what we?re very happy to announce is that ACM SIGCHI is going to be subsidizing more of your costs. We are still trying to work out the details, but what it looks like is that there will be a block of rooms at one of the conference hotels; the bill for which will be picked up by the conference / ACM.
3. The other big change is that there will not be a separate pre-conference period, with tutorials. Tutorials, now called courses, will happen during the regular conference. This means that the bulk of your hours will be worked during the four days of the conference, not during the three days prior to the main conference starting. We are still expecting that you should arrive on the Sunday (at the latest), and plan to stay through Thursday evening.
4. There will be a party Thursday evening.
5. If you will need any assistance in getting a visa, please send e-mail to chi2006sv@gmail.com. We must get this by the 30th of January in order to have enough time to get the letters prepared, and for you to get a visa.
6. T-Shirts. As in previous years, we?re asking the SVs to help design the t-shirt. For details on the competition, please see the SV web site. Submissions are due 27 January. The winner will get to see their design throughout the conference, plus a few other perks. Judging will be done by an impartial panel of CHI luminaries.

E-Mail Clarification

2005-09-30

Please do not send applications for the SV program to the chi2006sv@gmail.com address. Continue to use the online form on this website. Creating a username and password for the website will be critical for later parts of the SV program such as task bidding, and significantly reduces the amount of work we have to do. Thanks!

Mailing List Issues

2005-09-29

The chi2006-sv@acm.org address seems to be broken. Cliff and Mark are not getting any mail you may be sending to it. For the time being, please send mail to chi2006sv@gmail.com and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
The deadline for initial enrollment into the CHI2006 SV program remains Sept 30th. If you have signed up, but have not recieved a confirmation e-mail, please e-mail the chi2006sv@gmail.com address to make sure you are indeed enrolled.

Open for business!

2005-08-28

We're pleased to announce that enrollment for CHI2006 Student Volunteers is finally open. Pick the 'Sign Up Now!' link on the left to sign up for CHI2006. See you in Montreal!

Lottery Done

2005-08-11

The lottery has happened, and notifications have been sent out. At this point, the waitlist is 'live' -- people have already moved up on the waitlist. Please check back on a regular basis to see where you are on the waitlist.
